What Is Employee Wellbeing and Why Is It More Important Than Ever Before?

Employee wellbeing is exactly what it sounds like: it’s supporting the wellbeing of your team. Although this could come in the form of generalised perks or randomly planned workplace yoga classes, employee wellbeing is only genuinely impactful when it actively supports the different aspects of each individual’s wellbeing in a personalised way.

Employee wellbeing is an overarching concept and can include anything from improving the work-life balance of your team and ensuring they’re sufficiently financially supported to providing personalised benefits and wellness tools.

“Employee wellbeing goes beyond what they can access from their benefits, [including] whether they feel like their employers value their opinions and whether they feel like they’re on the right track. As well as small things like, ‘do I get to spend time with my family?’, ‘do I get a good work-life blend?’, ‘do I have good flexibility?’”

Ally Fekaiki, Juno CEO and Founder

Findings in our Employee Happiness Study show that 58% of respondents would seek a job at a rival company if it provided a better work-life balance or workplace culture, improved access to workplace benefits or access to wellness tools.

So, there’s no doubt that employee wellbeing is a vital factor in winning the war for talent and it’s certainly something that needs to be prioritised.

What Is Company Culture and Why Is It So Essential?

Although people typically believe that company culture simply refers to the attitudes and ways in which a company and its employees work, company culture encompasses so much more than that. It all stems from the ethos of the company and the values that the company holds dear.

“[Company] culture is not beautiful words on the wall. Culture is democratic and it’s not static. You don’t create your culture, it’s there”.

Nico Blier-Silvestri, Platypus CEO and Co-founder

Company culture is so important when it comes to attracting and retaining the right talent for your company because you want your employees to align with the values and beliefs that your company upholds and stands by.

Ideally, people want to work for a company that they feel represents their own values and beliefs. Therefore, creating a strong company culture enables employees to feel purpose in what they do and how they work rather than simply seeing it as a “job”. - They will become raving fans of what the company does and is, and want it to truly succeed.

When Should You Define Your Company Culture and How Can You Maintain It?

Defining your company culture is essential from day one but it’s never too late to influence your corporate ethos and purpose. Company culture should be considered from day one since it’s such a vital part of not only defining the values that the company holds, but also because you will only attract the right talent if you have a strong company culture. As Nico Blier-Silvestri says, “it’s how you will win the war for talent”.

“When I meet excited founders and they start their next company and start from scratch, they all say, “Culture is so important to me, I’m going to get this right from day 1 which is why I’m going to hire my People person on day one.”

Ally Fekaiki, Juno CEO and Founder

It’s not enough to just plan and deliver your company culture once without support as your company grows.

As Ally Fekaiki says, “there are two things you must do to impact your company culture: consistency and discipline -  it is the responsibility of senior management to be consistent in upholding the values and culture of a business and there should be strict discipline in not putting up with anything less than what you want from your culture. So if that’s a toxic employee or senior management not playing by the rules, for example, it is so important that that is addressed quickly and transparently”.

How Can You Effectively Onboard New Employees To Your Company Culture?

Obviously, one of the most important things about taking on the best possible new employees for your company, is firstly hiring those that already align with your company culture. Recruitment is the most important thing for every organisation and it needs to be perfect since it defines the future of the organisation.

However, once you’ve taken on someone new, it’s important that your company has a roadmap for onboarding them to ensure they’re set up for success - this is when showing them your company culture and providing them with sufficient employee wellbeing tools from the very beginning becomes crucial to onward success.

Additionally, it’s important to note that you should not expect a new employee to be performing at 100% capacity within their first 3 months or however long your onboarding process is. This mentality is not setting them up for success within your team. Rather, you need to accept that there is a ‘cultural onboarding’, there’s a ‘technical onboarding’ and there’s a ‘societal onboarding’ with a new set-up, new organisation, and new people - that can take a lot of time. However, if your hire was the right choice, it will be worth it for your company once they’re fully onboarded.
